Start with an evaluation.
- Fill out the Contact Form and tell us a bit about your dog and training goals
- Schedule a time to visit us, where we will evaluate what your dog knows and discuss what goals you'd like to work toward.
We train using a balanced training approach.
- Balanced training refers to a balance of positive and negative reinforcement.
- Early in the puppy phase, training often begins with positive reinforcement only; using food to encourage and reward desired behaviors.
- As the puppy ages and enters his/her ornery teenager phase, it is often advantageous to solidify good habits with positive reinforcement (i.e. treats) and discourage bad habits with negative reinforcement (i.e. verbal correction or a pop on the collar)
Frequently Asked Questions
Pricing?
Pricing varies a bit, since every dog has unique needs. General price quotes will be provided upon evaluation.
Isn't negative reinforcement training kinda mean?
Not at all! The tools we use are meant to correct, not to punish. For example, a 'pop' with a prong collar causes discomfort, not pain; just enough discomfort to let your dog know "Perhaps I should try a different behavior to get what I want".
What qualifications does the trainer have?
Barry Lammert is a retired army veteran with years of K9 unit training, in addition to obtaining certifications in balanced dog training. On the Testimonials page, you can see a couple pups that went on to be excellent family dogs, as well as pups that excelled in police dog careers.
What happens after the evaluation?
Shepherds on the Hill offers private lessons as well as board-and-train, where you could drop your pup off with us. Upon pickup, you'll be shown the exercises done with your dog so that you can keep up his training at home. We will do everything possible to set you up for success.
How long does it take to train a dog?
Basic obedience usually takes 6-8 weeks. If you are interested in a little more advanced training, such as off-leash training, that may extend the time needed.
Do you offer refreshers?
Absolutely, if you have a specific issue that pops up down the line, or just have questions for us, you can always give us a call!
